Most women come into a consult thinking their skin is aging because of wrinkles. It's not. The single biggest visual sign of aging skin isn't lines, it's color. Sun spots, age spots, redness, broken capillaries, uneven tone. These are the things that make skin look ten years older than the woman attached to it. And they're the things Lumecca corrects in a way nothing else on my menu does.

Lumecca is intense pulsed light, IPL, but it's not the IPL most people have heard of. Standard IPL platforms deliver about 1/3 the energy of Lumecca. The result is more sessions for less correction. Lumecca's power output is what lets it pull pigment in fewer sessions, with more dramatic results, on a single pass. It's what makes it the gold standard for what InMode calls "age reversal", and I call it that too, because Lumecca isn't treating wrinkles. It's reversing the color signs of sun damage and aging.

I sell it as a series of 3 because pigment correction works in stages. The first session pulls the most visible spots to the surface. The second pulls deeper pigment that wasn't reachable on the first pass. The third refines and unifies tone. Skipping sessions means leaving correction on the table.

The Mechanism

How it works

Lumecca delivers broad-spectrum light into the skin in carefully calibrated pulses. The light is selectively absorbed by two targets: melanin (the pigment that creates sun spots, freckles, and age spots) and hemoglobin (the blood in vascular lesions like broken capillaries and rosacea-related redness). When the light hits these targets, it converts to heat. The heat damages the unwanted pigment and vascular structures while leaving the surrounding skin intact. Over the following days, your body recognizes the damaged pigment as something to clear away. Sun spots darken first, then flake off naturally. Vascular lesions break down and are absorbed.

The treatment itself takes 15 to 25 minutes for the face, longer if we're adding neck and chest. We cleanse the skin thoroughly, apply protective eye shields (these are mandatory, IPL is bright), and apply a cool gel that helps light transmission. The Lumecca handpiece moves systematically across the treatment area, delivering pulses of light. You'll see a bright flash with each pulse, even through closed eyes and eye shields. The sensation is often described as a quick rubber band snap, followed by a warm sensation. Most clients describe it as easily tolerable. No numbing is required.

What makes Lumecca different from gentler IPL platforms is its peak energy density, up to three times that of standard IPL. That means deeper pigment can be reached. Vascular lesions that wouldn't respond to weaker light can be cleared. And the overall result is more substantial correction in fewer sessions.

The Fit

Who it's for, who it's not

Who it's for

  • Women with sun damage, age spots, or melasma (with caveats, see below)
  • Visible broken capillaries on the face
  • Rosacea-related redness and flushing
  • Uneven, blotchy skin tone
  • Loss of "luminosity" or that healthy-glow quality
  • Anyone in their 30s or older with cumulative sun history
  • Anyone preparing for a special event (the brightening shows quickly)

Who it's not for

  • Active sunburn or very recent tanning (real or self-applied)
  • Fitzpatrick skin types V, VI (we test cautiously and may not proceed)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Active skin infection or open wounds in the treatment area
  • Certain types of melasma (case-by-case, patch test required)
  • Anyone taking light-sensitizing medications
  • Anyone with a history of seizures triggered by light
  • Anyone expecting one session to do what three are designed to do

The Philosophy

Why I sell this as a series of 3

Pigment correction is not a one-and-done treatment. Here's why: melanin sits in your skin at different depths. Surface-level pigment, the most visible sun spots and age spots, comes up first, in the days after your first Lumecca session. But deeper pigment, the kind you can barely see but that contributes to overall dullness, requires repeated, spaced sessions to fully clear.

The same is true for vascular work. Broken capillaries and rosacea-flushing patterns often have multiple layers of vessels involved. The first session disrupts the most visible. The second reaches what was hidden underneath. The third refines what remains.

A single Lumecca session brightens. The series transforms. The price you pay for the planned series reflects the full correction, paying for one session and stopping there is paying for a glimpse of what the plan can do.

The Session

What to expect

  1. 01

    Pre-treatment (5 to 10 minutes)

No numbing required. We cleanse the skin thoroughly, apply protective eye shields (these are mandatory, IPL is bright), and apply a cool gel that helps light transmission.

  2. 02

The treatment itself (15 to 25 min face, longer for face + neck + chest)

The Lumecca handpiece moves systematically across the treatment area, delivering pulses of light. You'll see a bright flash with each pulse, even through closed eyes and eye shields. The sensation is often described as a quick rubber band snap, followed by a warm sensation. Most clients describe it as easily tolerable.

  3. 03

    Immediately after

Pigmented areas, sun spots, age spots, will appear noticeably darker. This is the desired response. The pigment has been brought to the surface and will flake off in the coming days. Vascular areas may look temporarily flushed or pinker. The overall skin may have a "warm" feeling for an hour or two.

  4. 04

    That day

You can return to normal activities, but avoid heat (saunas, hot tubs, intense exercise) and direct sun for the rest of the day. SPF is mandatory if going outside.

The Honest Part

Downtime, day by day

No guessing, no surprises. Here's exactly what each day looks like, proactively, so you can plan your week.

Day of treatment

Sun spots noticeably darker, almost like "coffee grounds." Vascular areas may look slightly pink. Mild warmth. SPF 50+ mandatory.

Day 1 to 3

The darkened pigment continues to darken slightly. Treated areas may feel a bit "tight" or dry. Avoid actives, hot water, and heat.

Day 4 to 7

The pigment begins to slough off naturally. It can look like fine "coffee grounds" flaking off the surface, do not pick or peel. Let it shed on its own. By the end of week 1, most clients are seeing dramatically brighter, more even skin.

Week 2

Most healing is complete. You may notice continued brightening for another week or two as the deeper response settles.

Beyond

Continue strict SPF protection. Future sun exposure will create new pigment and undo the work you just paid for.

The Payoff

Results timeline

Immediate

Pigmented spots visibly darker, this is the expected and desired response. Not yet your result.

Days 4 to 10

Pigment flakes off naturally. This is when you'll see the most dramatic brightening from session 1.

After session 2 (4 weeks later)

Deeper pigment cleared. Vascular correction more visible. Tone more even.

After session 3 (4 weeks after that)

Plan complete. Maximum brightening and tone correction achieved.

1 to 3 months

Continued refinement as the skin settles into its new baseline.

Beyond

Results last 1 to 2 years with diligent SPF. Annual maintenance Lumecca is the single best investment in keeping your tone where it is.
